 College Composition Workshops

The Live In-Person and Virtual Drop in workshops have concluded for the fall 2020 semester. We look forward to seeing you in our spring 2021 workshop times.

In-Person Workshops
Rowan Writing Center, Room 131 Campbell Library
In person workshops will be held in small groups inside the Rowan Writing Center. Masks required. ​
Wednesdays - 
2:00 - 3:00 PM


Thursdays - 
7:00 - 8:00 PM
All workshop topics may be requested by tutees for live virtual one on one appointments. Go to (link to schedule). Instructors may also request live online group workshopping go to the (insert link request a tutor stuff). 
Virtual Workshops
Undergraduate students are welcome to participate in the Wednesday Graduate Write-Ins and Writing Support workshop with Dom Marconi which is designed to also be open for Undergrads. All events will be conducted via Google Meet. You should log into your student email and access google meet through the google waffle at the top right hand corner. The meet nickname for all events is: Rowan Writing Center Graduate Support

Annotation & Critical Reading: Need help reading for in-depth comprehension, making connections, identifying key concepts or responding to texts? Tutors will lead participants through using strategies for making connections with texts including: agreeing, disagreeing, identifying bias, and reading in layers. ​

Getting Started: Strategies for Spurring Writing: Sometimes getting started is the hardest part! Tutors will introduce a variety of strategies to help you get unstuck, including freewriting, the talk-test, graphic organizers, and webbing. Bring an assignment sheet or topic. There will be time for tutors to work one to one with attendees after the information session. ​

Introductions and Thesis: Do your introductions feel boring or forced? Does your thesis never turn out how you imagine? Are you having a hard time focusing your argument? At the Introductions and Thesis workshop, you will work with tutors to workshop strategies for writing introductory paragraphs and crafting a strong thesis. ​

Argument and Synthesis: Are you having trouble synthesizing your sources with your own voice? Do you have no idea what synthesis even is? At this small group session, trained tutors will offer strategies for improving your synthesis skills, integrating your sources with your own voice, entering the academic conversation, and developing your argument. Bring your essay and a few questions you would like to focus on. Information sessions will be followed by drop-in tutoring and time to write.

Paraphrasing & Quote Sandwich:  ​Do you know how to integrate research and ideas from texts/research into your papers?  Learn strategies for putting other people’s ideas into your own words or when you should leave them alone and use a quote. Tutors will also demonstrate how to introduce and explain quotes so that they fit well into your paper and how to cite quoted and paraphrased material. ​

Strategies for Revision: Paragraphing & Organizing: Do you wish your paper flowed better? Do you have page long paragraphs? Do you need help transitioning from paragraph to paragraph? This workshop will cover topic sentences, breaking up and chunking paragraphs, transition sentences and linking-ideas. ​

Conclusions and your Take Away: Do your conclusions feel like something you just tack on to the end of your paper? At the Conclusions and Take Away workshop, you will work with trained tutors to end your paper with a bang! You will go over strategies for writing effective conclusions and work with your tutor to improve your essay. Bring your essay and questions. Mini-lessons will be followed by drop-in tutoring and time to write.

APA and Incorporating Sources:  Are you freaking out about APA? Do you feel like you are throwing quotes into your paper without the right context? At this small group workshop, you will meet with a trained tutor who will offer strategies for improving your APA skills. At these sessions, you and the other workshop members will also make sure you have incorporated them effectively and with purpose. Bring your essay and questions. Mini-lessons will be followed by tutoring and time to write. ​

​Strategies for Self Revision & Editing: Is your message clear? Can you place yourself in the shoes of a reader? Are you delivering the message you intend to deliver? Are you ready for polishing and editing or do you have big picture issues to resolve? Not sure? Learn how to make such writerly choices and when to phone a friend. You will get more out of this session if you bring a current or past paper to work from.


 Portfolio workshops for First Year Writers: Need help assembling your final portfolio? Not sure which projects to pick for your portfolio? Need help making deeper revisions, interpreting FYW Core Values, working on your critical engagement, or crafting your reflective statement? This workshop will offer examples of a completed portfolio on paper and electronic, assistance working on the various pieces of your portfolio, and Writing Arts tutors who can help you with Core Value questions.  ​
